TRAUMA AND MENTAL HEALTH INFORMED SCHOOL AWARD

We are a school for children aged 11-19 with complex learning difficulties including: autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), moderate to severe learning difficulties, physical difficulties and Behaviour, Emotional & Social difficulties (BESD).

Our vision is simple: ‘Bringing out the Best

Every one of our pupils will receive the respect, encouragement and opportunity they need to prepare them for their adult lives. Key to our success is enabling our pupils to develop a strong foundation of well-being with a balance between an academic and vocational ‘hands-on’ curriculum that promotes the life skills that enables our pupils to mature into adult life. We strive to ‘bring out the best’ possible standards in our pupils so that they become effective members of society; the type of adults you would be happy to have as your neighbours.

Overall Assessment:

“Ysgol Maesgwyn provides a safe, caring and supportive environment in which the young people are supported by the staff team from the minute they arrive at school to when they leave and beyond.  The pupils are happy and safe because the relationships between them and the adults are consistent and PACEful. The school’s Well-being lead, a TIS practitioner, is an excellent role model and she has a team who are dedicated to doing the best they can for the young people in their care.  The school is led by a passionate, effective head teacher whose values are pupil-centred and support the ethos of empowering and supporting the pupils as individuals in order that they can achieve their full potential with enthusiasm and enjoyment.  The willingness and supportive nature of the staff team to implement trauma informed approaches to support all pupils is clearly evident.  Staff express a feeling of collective support that exists between all colleagues – they support each other.  The use of evidence-based interventions ensures pupils have access to appropriate and supportive mechanisms that reflect the PRRRs. The caring nature of the staff is an obvious asset to the enhancement of relationships throughout the school.

My overriding memories of the day will be the enthusiasm of the staff team to do their absolute best for the pupils in their care, their knowledge of individuals and importance they place on relationships along with the smiles and giggles of the pupils seen as they took part in a range of interventions in this school described quite enthusiastically by one pupil as a ‘weird family’.” - TISUK Assessor
